Independent Living

Self-Contained apartments are for seniors who are able to live independently and want the security of living in a seniors setting. The suites are one bedroom units with a full 3-piece bathroom, kitchenette and living room.  Fridge, stove and window coverings are in each suite and a surface parking stall is provided for client-owned vehicles. Washers and Dryers are provided either in Tenant laundry rooms or individual suites, depending on the facility.  Basic yard maintenance and snow removal is provided.

Homeland Housing buildings are smoke-free and smoking is not allowed in tenant rooms or common areas.  Sorry, no pets are allowed.

Eligibility For Self-Contained Accommodation

Applicants must meet residency criteria as per Government and Homeland Housing Policy.

  • Must be 65 years or older.  Couples are recognized as a seniors’ household where at least one (1) family member is 65 years of age or over.
  • Persons under 65 years of age will only be considered if vacancies exist and there is no waiting list.  They must be appropriate to the housing accommodation being applied for.
  • Must be suitable for independent living in a seniors setting.
  • Priority is given to low income seniors and applicants within Homeland Housing’s municipal areas.
  • Priority is based on a point scoring system which assesses accommodation needs.


Self-Contained rent is RGI (Rent Geared to Income) based on 30% of total income, plus the cost of electricity, telephone, cable TV and parking (if required).  Heat and water are included.  Rent is reviewed annually and set with a minimum and maximum rent amount, established according to Market Rent in each municipality.
